The 28th UN Climate Change Conference will bring together the countries that have signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and other climate players. CIRAD will be participating, by organizing side events with its partners from France, Europe and the global South. The conference will be an opportunity to promote major research results to an audience of policymakers and other COP28 participants.

Food Systems are important GHG emitters and are strongly impacted by climate change. Thye have to become part of the solution. To achieve climate objectives, but also food security, environmental sustainability and decent livelihoods, food systems need to undergo a profound transformation. In view of these multiple challenges, AgroEcology represents a powerful avenue for driving food systems towards sustainability. The event will present key elements of agroecology in relation to climate change, both on adaptation and on mitigation, and will present successful experiences of food system transformation based on agroecology.

The side event will provide an opportunity to compare the points of view and experiences of the various French and foreign players involved in improving soil health, with the dual aim of increasing agricultural productivity and soil carbon sequestration capacity.

12:15-13:15, Francophonie Pavilion, side event organized by CIRAD, IRD, INRAE within the framework of the “Overseas 4 per 1000” Initiative.
The aim of this side event is to share the state of knowledge and the levers for action in the French Overseas Departments and Regions, based on an unprecedented recent assessment of soil carbon stocks in these territories. The operational and research recommendations for preserving these carbon stocks will be summarised and placed in a broader regional context in order to discuss their place within the current major challenges facing agriculture in the face of climate change in the island, Indian Ocean and Amazonian contexts. The objective of this event is to contribute to the creation of spaces for territorial and inter-territorial dialogue between science, politics and agricultural and forestry stakeholders, with a view to designing public policies and making political decisions.

Healthier soils are paramount to healthy ecosystems. They allow for better productivity, improved food quality and higher carbon sequestration. Multistakeholders will share their vision on pathways for healthier soils to meet food and climate goals, in diverse socio-economic contexts.

The aim of this side event is to present and discuss the first enteric methane emission factors, taking into account the seasonal nature of fodder resources. It will also present emission factors taking into account the feeding practices of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists. It will present tests of different scenarios for mitigating enteric methane emissions. It will also discuss the setting up of a SPIR network to improve the system for low-cost assessment of the chemical composition and nutritional value of ruminant feed resources. Finally, the side event will present the development of the training component on GHG assessment tools and methods.

This side event will focus on the enhancement of the GLEAM-i tool by the CaSSECS project. It will also present the training offered to managers in the region on the use of the improved tool.

This side event aims to continue to urge local and international decision-makers to take soil into account in the fight against climate change and for food security.
