Three other people, all members of the Indian Air Force, tested positive for the Zika virus in Kanpur, bringing the number to four.

Kanpur District Magistrate Vishak G. confirmed this: “With the three new cases, the tally is now four in the city.”

The first case of the virus was also confirmed in IAF staff on October 23. However, all 22 people, including family members, relatives and close contacts of the first case, had tested negative for the virus.

Later, samples from 175 IAF staff were sent for testing and reports on Saturday confirmed three had tested positive.

A high alert was sounded on the outskirts of the IAF hangars at the level of the maintenance command, in addition to neighboring civilian localities, in particular the localities of Pardewanpurwa and Pokharpur concerning the virus transmitted by mosquitoes.

To verify the spread and track the source of the Zika virus, 74 teams from the health department collected samples from nearly 204 additional people, including 29 pregnant women and 85 Air Force personnel from 11,493 households during an ongoing survey in the localities of Pardevanpurwa and Pokharpur in Chakeri under the supervision of experts from Delhi and Lucknow.

Dr GK Mishra, Additional Director, Medical Health and Family Welfare, Kanpur Division, said all possible measures were being taken to check for the spread of the virus and aggressive testing was also underway.
