The Effect of Phosphorus on Alleviating Boron Toxicity in Tomato Plants


Boron plays an important role in the nutrition and growth of plants. Boron in low concentration is essential for plants but produces a toxic effect if present in large quantities. Boron toxicity is particularly common in arid and semi-arid climates and in areas where thermal water resources are used. High levels of boron in soils can cause toxicity in plants and inhibit plant growth. The negative effects of toxicity can be reduced by certain plant nutrition treatments.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of plant nutrition treatments on alleviating B toxicity, and the effects of increasing P doses on tomato plants at toxic levels of B have been observed under greenhouse conditions. The study was carried out in a greenhouse during the autumn growing period, in Antalya-Turkey, and using 4 different levels of B (0, 5, 10 and 20 mg kg-1 with H 3 BO 3) and 3 levels of P (25, 50, 100 mg kg-1 with ammonium monophosphate). Tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., Cv. ‘Tayfun F1’) were grown in plastic pots (6 kg soil pot-1) for a period of 10 weeks to determine certain growth parameters and the content of nutrients.

As a result of the research, it was determined that the growth of the tomato plants was adversely affected by the toxicity of B and that symptoms of boron toxicity were occurring in the plants. Applications of B and P increased the nutrient content of the plant, and treatment with P2 (50 mg kg-1 P) decreased the B content of the plant. The increase in P treatments resulted in an increase in the nutrient content, thus ensuring plant development and the negative effects of toxicity were reduced due to the dilution effect.
